Moline Police and Moline Water Department personnel have responded over the last two weekends to check on ‘leaking hydrants’. On each of the four occurrences when water department personnel arrived, the fire hydrants were found opened and flowing. Police believe someone is maliciously and illegally opening these fire hydrants.
The hydrants have been opened sometime after midnight but before dawn. The tampering has created more than just wasted water, but traffic hazards and the potential for serious property damage.
Tampering with any part of a public water supply can constitute a violation of the homeland security laws and depending on the incident individuals could be prosecuted federally.
Moline Police ask residents to keep an eye on the fire hydrants in the neighborhoods. If residents see someone tampering with a hydrant, call 911.
If you know who is responsible for opening the hydrants you can receive up to $1000 cash if you call Crime Stoppers (309) 762-9500 where you can report your information and where you will remain anonymous.
