Traffic Investigation Unit

About the Traffic Investigation Section

The Moline Police Department Traffic Investigation Section’s mission is to investigate, enforce, and educate. The section is responsible for the complete investigation of fatal and serious injury crashes. The section also investigates hit and run crashes that are reported to the Police Department. Other duties include the coordination of security and traffic direction for the many special events and road races that take place in the city each year. The section also oversees the adult crossing guards for all the elementary schools located in the city. The section is supervised by a sergeant and is staffed by one full-time traffic investigator and a secretary.

DUIs

The Moline Police Department is dedicated to the enforcement of the state’s DUI laws and aggressively pursues all DUI arrests. The department is committed to the effort to keep the streets of Moline clear of impaired drivers.

Investigations

The traffic section has one full-time investigator who is a state certified traffic crash reconstruction specialist. There are also additional patrol officers who are trained in crash reconstruction. Investigators use state-of-the-art measuring devices to process crash scenes and produce scale diagrams to conduct in depth investigations. Investigators have testified in civil proceedings, criminal trials, and coroner’s inquests as to the results of these investigations.

Enforcement

Selective enforcement programs include increased presence in school zones and cross-town corridors such as River Drive, 12th Avenue, and Avenue of the Cities. The section has targeted dangerous intersections with directed patrols to reduce the number of injury accidents in these areas.

Grants

The section has received several grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation designed to reduce the number of accidents and also the number of injuries resulting from those accidents. These grants allow the Moline Police Department to have officers work overtime to detect and arrest DUI drivers and to enforce the occupant safety laws helping to ensure all occupants in a vehicle are properly restrained.

Education

The section teaches eight-hour blocks for the Moline Senior High School Driver’s Education Program. The section has a speed monitoring device that is placed throughout the city to conduct speed surveys. Neighborhoods can request this device by contacting the Traffic Investigation Section at 309.524.2210.
