Curbside Recycling Coming in 2008

At the September 18,
2007, City Council Meeting, a Resolution was
passed authorizing the Mayor and City Clerk to enter
into a 10-year agreement with Midland Davis Corporation
for curbside recycling services in the amount of $2.56
per month, per household. The Midland Davis Corporation
will purchase 16,000 48-gallon carts and two new semi-automated
rear-loader trucks. The agreement, which will commence
on March 30, 2008, stipulates for every-other-week
single stream collection for each residence in Moline.
Those residents currently receiving garbage collection
will also receive the curbside recycling service. The
$2.56 fee will appear on residents' quarterly
water/sewer utility bill.
Items
that would be picked up include newspapers, magazines,
paper bags, telephone books, catalogs, office paper,
junk mail, envelopes, corrugated cardboard, chipboard,
paper frozen food packages, juice boxes, bulky
cardboard, plastics numbered 1-7, formed steel
containers, aluminum, tin/steel/bi-metal cans, or any
other item characterized as recyclable with the
exception of glass. Glass recycling will continue
to be available at one city drop-off site.
Moline
generates 17,500 tons of trash annually, at a disposal
cost of $264,000. At a minimum, 25 percent of
waste can be recycled through the implementation of a
curbside recycling program.
