Mosquito Abatement
How to Avoid Mosquitoes
In accordance with the recommendations of the Illinois Department of Public Health, the City of Moline treats all 4,000 catch basins and its two ponds twice annually with larvicide. This reduces the population of the Culex Mosquito that transmits the West Nile Virus by interrupting the mosquito’s breeding cycle. Residents are encouraged to drain all standing water from their personal property where possible, including:
  • Cleaning gutters;
  • Draining bird baths;
  • Draining children’s pools when they are not in use;
  • Other items that may hold or trap water that can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Residents are also encouraged to avoid times and places when mosquitoes bite. For more information, residents are directed to call the Illinois Department of Public Health at 217.782.5830, Text Telephone (TTY - hearing impaired use only) 1.800.547.0466.
