Neighborhood Project of the Year Contest
Congratulations to Wheelock/Velie Neighborhood
Watch & Association, who is the
2007 “Neighborhood Project of the Contest” winner.
Members from the Association will be recognized at the Moline
City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 4, at 6:30 p.m., and
will be presented with a $300 grant check to be used toward
future neighborhood projects.
The Wheelock/Velie Neighborhood Watch and Association was
established four years ago with the goal of building a better
community in which to live. The association currently has 25
active members. Some of their projects during the contest period
of July 2006 - July 2007 included:
• Planning and participating in a Browning Park fundraising
event that raised $1,000 toward the Browning Park Renovation
plan.
• Planting of five new trees to replace trees along the
boulevards lost due to age, weather and disease.
• Participated in the City’s 50/50 Sidewalk replacement program
to replace deteriorated or hazardous sidewalks in their
neighborhood.
• Participated in Browning Park Beautification Day by planting
flowers, cleaning the park and adding mulch around trees.
• Participated in two city-wide neighborhood clean-up days,
where neighborhood volunteers worked side by side with city
staff for garbage collection and clean-up. Items collected
included cement, tires, couches, brush, and yard waste.
• Actively participated with the City’s Neighborhood Improvement
Officer to improve blight conditions in the neighborhood and
Crime Stoppers to establish a neighborhood watch program.
• Participated in Earth Day Clean-up to pick up litter
throughout the alleys and streets, including street sweeping and
removal of debris from the street sewers.
• The association regularly holds neighborhood meetings, assists
each other with projects, flower sharing, and more.
“The Wheelock Velie Neighborhood Association has worked together
in many ways to help beautify and maintain a cleaner community”,
said Mayor Don Welvaert. “I am truly proud of this group of
residents, as well as all of our existing neighborhood
associations, who are joining together to help make Moline a
better place to live, work and play.”
Moline’s Neighborhood Project of the Year Contest was open to
all existing neighborhood associations within the city.
Associations submitted a description of their neighborhood
project(s) or organized event that occurred between July 2006
and July 2007. Project submissions were judged by the City’s
Neighborhood Partnership Committee (NPC). The NPC plans to make
the contest an annual event.
